Saw this at the Reno/Tahoe airport. If tacky had a photo next to it in the dictionary... Quick layover at the Denver International Airport. Walked about half a mile to my connecting gate. In the distance you can see the International Terminal. The roof is designed to look like a village of tee-pees. Touched down in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The weather was an unusual 9*C (48*F), windy and rainy.
Met with Martin Whitbread, the founder of Living Books Distributers and he swung me by the Sandman Hotel to drop off my stuff. I had the pleasure of joining Martin on a few errands, here he is signing off a shipment of books. We swung by the bank and got my money converted. The smallest bill is a 5. The rest come in $2 and $1 coins that they call Toonies and Loonies. I made sure to pick up a few special edition Saskatchewan Roughrider (their Canadian Football League) Loonies. Finished helping Martin load up a shipment of book catalogs and he dropped me back off at the hotel. An hour later, Mary and Peter Thiessen picked me and drove me over to the Saskatoon Station Place- a fantastic restaurant in a two story Victorian style building that is adjoined to two vintage railroad dining cars.
In the lobby of the Saskatoon Station Place with Mary and Peter Thiessen. We sat in a boot at the end of one dining car. The mirror gives the perspective behind us- notice the brass luggage racks. Mary went with the chicken, but Peter and I opted for the buffalo steak- it was excellent.
Peter is a former farmer and now the town handy man and a volunteer firefighter in Borden, about half an hour from Saskatoon. Mary has been working with Living Books Distributors for over eighteen years now. If only that price was per gallon. It's actually 99 cents/liter, or about $4/gallon.
Vangie Whitbread picked me up from the hotel in the morning and made sure I had the chance to pick up a bagel and yogurt at the locals favorite fast (and predominantly healthy) food spot- Timmy's. It felt strange to use only two coins to pay for a bill that cost about $3.50. The ride out to the Living Books headquarters in Borden. Saskatchewan is a northern extension of the Great Plains. A glimpse of the North Saskatchewan River.
Rolled wheat bales. A somewhat different sight for those used to only seeing rectangular hay bales. Farmers are stressed with all the rain the province has been getting right now during harvest time. Arriving into the small town of Borden where Living Books is headquartered. The Living Books Distributors warehouse. Living Books distributes Christian books to non-traditional outlets like grocery stores, drug stores, co-ops and the like. They also work with a host of independent distributors who direct sale books at conventions, in church libraries and in book groups.
